Mr. Cimino called the meeting to order at 6:03 pm.
Lori Stern, Alliance for Healthier Generation: Mr. Cimino introduced Ms. Stern, a health educator from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and a former JMS parent. Ms. Stern summarized health education requirements for the Essentials Academic Learning Requirements (EALR¹s), Classroom based assessments for Health reporting to start in 2008-09, and HIV/AIDS education. She also briefly reviewed health and fitness statistics for Washington State. Follow-up: Members discussed the presentation and continue to recommend augmenting the current health curriculum/class for the current 8th graders. New curriculum adoption next school year.
Kevin Hoonan, OSD Technology Specialist: Mr. Cimino introduced Mr. Hoonan from the Olympia School District Tech Department. Mr. Hoonan described his 3 phrase presentations on social networking for the 21st century for students, staff and parents. Follow-up: To be incorporated into Orientation/Open House for parents for 2008-09. Mr. Cimino to schedule a student presentation for this year.
Oly Park and Rec Follow- Up: Bulk mailing for ³Free Week² to notify parents and students of opportunity to check out after school program. Donation of food left overs from lunch extremely well received. Follow-up: Mr. Havens to complete JSSO request for ³Wish List², food supplies, field trips and tuition.
Health Curriculum: Tamara Hoffman contacted Juvenile Court and ³Choice Program² available to be scheduled. Lucy awaiting Health Curriculum from CHS. Follow-Up: Mr. Cimino to contact Cindy Mitchell who is assigned to CHS and JMS as a Prevention/Interventionalist.
Jeff Carpenter from OSD is requesting that a community committee be formed to review four different health curriculums for the 200-09 school year. One will be selected by the committee and presented to the school board. Mandatory reporting on health curriculums are required by the next school year.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
The next meeting will be held March 4, 2008 at 6 p.m. in the library.
