6th Grade Math (Math 6)

At JMS, in Grade 6, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

6th Grade JAMS Math (6 JAMS Math)

The 6th-grade JAMS class will focus on an integrated approach to science by providing an introduction to energy and studying areas like the scientific process, earth history, diversity of life, and catastrophic geologic events. Math topics will include: equations, rates and ratios, probability, rational numbers, and three dimensional figures.

7th Grade Math (Math 7)

At JMS, in Grade 7, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

7/8 Compressed Math (7 /8 Comp Mth)

At JMS, in Grade 7/8, instructional time should focus on four critical areas from Grade 7 math: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples. It also includes the critical area from Grade 8: formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations and solving linear equations.

8th Grade Math (Math 8)

At JMS, in Grade 8, instructional time should focus on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

Algebra 1

At JMS, Algebra 1 is a high school level class intended for students that are ready for advanced math. Students may be enrolled if they have excelled on standardized tests and the 7th/8th Compressed math class.  Open to 7th grade JAMS students who meet the cut scores on standardized tests.

Algebra 1 introduces students to variables, algebraic expressions, equations, functions,

inequalities, and their multiple representations. The students develop the ability to

explore and solve real-world application problems and communicate mathematical ideas

clearly. This course lays the foundation for every subsequent course in mathematics.

Success in Algebra I must be encouraged and emphasized since it is an accurate indicator

of future success.

Geometry

At JMS, Geometry is a high school level class for students who have shown mastery in Algebra 1. The curriculum begins with basic geometry (review of past learning), constructions,  reasoning and proofs, parallel and perpendicular lines, transformations, congruent triangles, relationships within triangles, quadrilaterals and other polygons, similarity, right triangles and trigonometry, circles, circumference and area, surface area and volume, and finally probability.  Open to 8th grade JAMS students who completed Algebra as a 7th grade student.
