Students REACH Year's End with New Productions

Character of Prospero Wearing Frightening Skull Mask about to Get You!

The students of Jefferson Middle School REACH are looking forward to debuting four new theatrical productions June 18 and 19.

Over this past semester, they have read classic and modern mysteries and dipped their toes into the macabre.

Students in third and fifth period will be bringing Edgar Allan Poe's famous mysteries to life in a brand new production, Masque of the Red Death.  The show is an original story that combines several of Poe's most famous works: "The Tell-Tale Heart," "Masque of the Red Death," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Black Cat," "The Raven," and "Annabel Lee."

Students in second and sixth periods will be turning Shirley Jackson's most famous novel, The Haunting of Hill House, into a mystery combining several of the story-telling techniques they learned this semester.

Masque of the Red Death will run at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18 and June 19.  Hill House will be presented at 7:15 p.m. on those same days.  Both shows will have completely different casts.

This is the 29th year the REACH program has put on productions at Jefferson Middle School, and the third year that those productions have been completely student-created.  From reading the original works to adapting them into script format to building the sets that bring those stories to life, along with acting, lighting, and sound, students in REACH learn the power of teamwork, cooperation, communication, and time management in an immersive, creative environment where they are responsible for putting on a final production the school, their families, and the community can all enjoy, and of which they can be proud.

8th grade REACH Student, Will Livingston, the technical director for all of the shows says, "REACH has been my window to the greater Jefferson community.  I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in REACH these past two years, and I am looking forward to taking what I have learned from the class and applying it to my high school years and beyond.  REACH is really one of those classes that gives you real-world experience, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity."
