New Fantasy-Themed REACH Productions Debut

Students in Jefferson Middle School's Reading Enrichment and Arts Cohort for High-Achievers brought fantasy worlds to life this semester through brand new theatrical productions: Alice in Wonderland and The Horned King.

The Horned King Attacks the Heroes

The REACH students explored the works of Lewis Carroll, JK Rowling and Lloyd Alexander, and compiled the magic formula that helped bring their shows to life.   They selected their favorite stories and adapted them into script format.

The March Hare and the Mad Hatter

They presented them as four completely student-led theatrical productions: two shows with two separate casts and crews.  Both plays debuted on January 28 and were free to attend.  Alice in Wonderland was the first show.  It started at 5:45 p.m.  The Horned King followed immediately after at 7:15 p.m.  A different cast and crew performed each show at the same time the following night, January 29.

All shows were free and open to the public.

Both plays were completely student-written and produced and were the final product of a semester-long study of the fantasy genre.

Each year, students in the program, which serves highly-capable and high-achieving students from across Olympia, study classic literature from various genres and ultimately adapt those stories to the stage.  REACH is a student-led class with all students contributing to the final script.

Student directors then cast the show and select stage managers as well as audio and lighting directors to bring the show to life.

The REACH program has been a staple of Jefferson Middle School for decades and was reinvented in 2016 to focus on classic literature, creative writing and student-leadership.  Since 2017, REACH productions have been completely student-led.
